Biography
Bobby Yanagawa is the Division Head for Cardiac Surgery, St Michael's Hospital and Program Director for Cardiac Surgery at the University of Toronto. Dr. Yanagawa obtained his BSc and PhD from the University of British Columbia and his MD degree and Cardiac Surgery Residency from the University of Toronto. He has completed research fellowships at the University of Wales College of Medicine (Cardiff, UK), National Cardiovascular Center (Osaka, Japan) and at St Michael’s Hospital (Toronto, Canada). He completed an advanced valvular fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. Dr. Yanagawa is currently the Director of the National Cardiac Surgery Residency Training Bootcamp. His teaching philosophy has been to strategically use traditional and innovative teaching tools including on-line surgical simulation, on-line debates, wellness and diversity talks and mentorship programs. Dr. Yanagawa is also a champion of Equity-Diversity-Integration and is the first author of the National Cardiac Surgery EDI Position Statement.
About the Award
This award, also established in 2003, recognizes outstanding contributions of faculty members who demonstrate excellence in teaching and serve as mentors and advocates to postgraduate medical trainees. The award may acknowledge continuous or long- term excellence in instruction, career counseling, promotion of collegiality, or role modeling for postgraduate trainees.
