Biography

Dr Nancy Down is a general surgeon at North York General Hospital where she is the current Division Head of General Surgery, as well as the Medical Director of the Breast Diagnostic Centre. She has been actively involved in teaching surgical residents, family practice residents and medical students in the clinical setting for over 25 years. North York General Hospital has consistently ranked as one of the top sites for surgical education at the University of Toronto, and Dr. Down has achieved excellent teaching scores and reviews from her trainees. In recognition of this, she was awarded the Dr. Bob Mustard Teaching award in June 2018 by the U of T Division of General Surgery.A particular focus of her teaching is hands-on teaching in the operating room, and mentoring female residents and medical students with an interest in a career in general surgery.

About the Award

This award recognizes sustained (normally 10 years) excellence in community-based teaching, and may include mentorship, the integration of scholarship in teaching and interprofessional collaboration.

Established by the Faculty of Medicine in 2012 the Community Based Teaching Awards recognize the significant contribution of an increasing number of University of Toronto community-based teachers to the learning of medical students and residents.
