Daniel Gorman MD, FRCPC

Biography

Dr. Daniel Gorman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry, and a Staff Psychiatrist at The Hospital for Sick Children. From 2014 to 2022 he was the Program Director for the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Program, and from 2011 to 2014 he was the Chair of the Research and Scientific Program Committee of the Canadian Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. His clinical and academic interests include Tourette syndrome, ADHD, OCD, child psychopharmacology, and medical education. He has given over 75 invited presentations and authored or co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, mainly related to childhood neuropsychiatric disorders and their pharmacological management. He is also known for the “Advanced Child Psychopharmacology” course, which he created in 2006 and directed until 2018. He lives with his wife and two children, and outside of work and family life, he is a tennis fanatic.

From the Nomination

As the CAP (Child and Adolescent Psychiatry) Residency PD, Dr. Gorman led several initiatives to develop and optimize program operations, The program was accredited in 2012 and only had 1 resident graduate from the accredited program prior to his becoming PD. During his tenure, over 30 residents graduated from the program. He has also been a strong advocate for the recruitment and training of Child Psychiatrists in Canada. In addition, Dr. Gorman has been recognized for his teaching excellence. He was the first child psychiatrist to receive the Department of Psychiatry’s Robin Hunter Award, which is awarded annually to one faculty member in our department of over 900 faculty members. He was also nominated for the 2020 PARO Residency Program Excellence Award. Since 2006, Dr. Gorman has supervised over 70 residents and fellows for clinical rotations with a TES score for all training sessions from 2006 to 2022 at 4.82 (compared to 4.51 for all teachers). He has also given over 320 postgraduate seminars/lectures, for which he received a mean overall rating of 4.7 (out of 5).

About the Award

This award, also established in 2003, recognizes outstanding contributions of faculty members who demonstrate excellence in teaching and serve as mentors and advocates to postgraduate medical trainees. The award may acknowledge continuous or long- term excellence in instruction, career counseling, promotion of collegiality, or role modeling for postgraduate trainees.
