Malika Sharma MD MEd FRCPC

Biography

Malika Sharma is an HIV and Infectious Disease physician and Clinician Teacher at St. Michael's Hospital. Clinically, she focuses on caring for people and communities who are often marginalized and oppressed by our healthcare systems, including those who are racialized, those who use substances and people living with HIV. Her teaching and scholarly interests center on anti-racist and feminist practices within medical education, harm reduction, and the structural determinants of health.

Dr. Sharma is a tremendous clinician and teacher who is focused on building capacity to achieve anti-oppressive health care through various unique initiatives. Her novel curricula that target undergraduate, postgraduate and faculty learners had a broad and deep impact. Moreover, her work to engage relevant community partners ensures that her efforts are grounded in their needs and unique circumstances.

About the Award

The Robert Sheppard Award for Health Equity and Social Justice was established in 2016 in honour of Dr. Robert Sheppard who served as Associate Dean, Postgraduate Medicine. Dr. Sheppard was deeply committed to volunteering initiatives in his community after retiring from medicine. This award recognizes the outstanding contributions of faculty members and postgraduate trainees in the development and/or implementation of activities, programs or research related to social justice and health equity in faculty development or postgraduate medical education.
