Biography

Dr. Monica Farcas is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Division of Urology. She is a surgeon at St. Michael’s Hospital, subspecializing in laparoscopic and robotic surgery, endourology, and renal transplantation. She received her Master’s degree in engineering at McGill University and obtained her MD and residency training in Urology at the University of Toronto. She then completed a two-year Endourological Society clinical fellowship at St. Michael’s Hospital.

In 2022, Dr. Farcas received the Emerging Leader Award as part of the Temerty Faculty of Medicine Dean’s Alumni Awards for her key mentorship role, especially for female residents, fellows and medical students. Dr. Farcas was the first female academic kidney transplant surgeon in Canada. She is also the founder of the Society of Canadian Women in Urology.

Dr. Farcas’ research interests are in surgical innovation and surgical device development. She is described as “a talented robotic/transplant surgeon, problem-solver and innovator in her field”.

About the Award

This award, also established in 2003, recognizes outstanding contributions of faculty members who demonstrate excellence in teaching and serve as mentors and advocates to postgraduate medical trainees. The award may acknowledge continuous or long- term excellence in instruction, career counseling, promotion of collegiality, or role modeling for postgraduate trainees.
