Shaheen Darani MD, FRCPC

Biography

Dr. Darani completed her medical degree at McMaster University, her psychiatry residency training at the University of Toronto, and a fellowship in forensic psychiatry at Yale University.

Dr. Darani is a clinician educator and assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto and staff psychiatrist at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). She is a treasured and passionate educator serving as the Director of Faculty Development in the Department of Psychiatry, past Site Director for Postgraduate Education at CAMH, and Associate Director of Postgraduate Learner Affairs/Wellness in the Office of Learner Affairs in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the UofT. Nationally, she is a member of the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Canada Forensic Subspecialty Examination Board as well as the Specialty Committee in Psychiatry. Internationally, she sits on the executive board of the Association for Academic Psychiatry where leads mentorship activities within the organization and Chairs their Career Development Committee.

Dr. Darani has led several education innovations, notably an award-winning correctional officer mental health training to improve the lives of inmates presenting with mental illness as well as a very successful unconscious bias education program that reached almost 600 faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Toronto. She is an award-winning teacher and advocate, having received the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada Clinical Teacher Award, the American Psychiatric Association Irma Bland Award for Excellence in Resident Education, the Dr. Robert Conn Resident Advocacy Award from the Professional Association of Residents of Ontario, the Association for Academic Psychiatry's Early Career Development Award and the Department of Psychiatry’s Robin Hunter Award for Postgraduate Teaching and Marie Mara Award for Residency Advocacy.

About the Award

The Sarita Verma Award for Advocacy and Mentorship in Postgraduate Medicine was established in 2010 and named after the former Vice Dean, Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME). The award recognizes staff or faculty members who exhibit an exemplary level of leadership and commitment to social responsibility, mentorship, advocacy, and resident wellbeing.
