Biography

The COVID19 pandemic caused major disruptions to routine care for patients, academic work in medicine and the teaching of learners. At the same time Faculty found that they not only had to learn a new way to care for patients virtually, they also had to supervise learners remotely. The team of Faculty Developers, Undergraduate Leaders, a Resident and a Medical Student came together to teach Faculty the new skill of Virtual Supervision.

Quickly creating a multifactorial program to addresses different learning styles, the program provided a range of supports including one on one mentorship, an online resource called 6 steps to successful virtual supervision and an iterative series of accredited workshops entitled How to Incorporate Virtual Supervision of Learners into Medical Care. Much harm was done during the COVID19 pandemic, but it also brought out the best in many of us. This exceptional team of busy clinicians and learners was able to create a supportive atmosphere that enabled overworked clinicians to take on new teaching responsibilities and work together with peers and students to maintain learning during a most difficult time.

About the Award

These awards, named after one of our own award-winning educators, were established in 2005 to recognize outstanding departmental faculty development programs leading to the enhancement of education, instruction, career development, professionalism, inter-professionalism, and/or health professional leadership within the Faculty of Medicine. There are three categories: Sustained Excellence in Teaching as a Faculty Developer, Innovation in Program Development and Design, and Sustained Contribution to the Field of Faculty Development.
