Biography
Dr. Wright is a Professor of Surgery at the University of Toronto and practices at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Her clinical areas of interest are melanoma and breast cancer. She is the lead surgeon of the Temerty Breast Cancer Centre and awarded the Solway Chair in Breast Cancer in 2023. Dr Wright was the Program Director for General Surgical Oncology from 2010 to 2022 which is successfully accredited by the Royal College, the Fellowship Council and recognized by the ACGME and the European Society of Surgical Oncology. Dr Wright worked at Cancer Care Ontario implementing Multidisciplinary Cancer Conference in Ontario (2010- 2015) and now works at Cancer Care Ontario-Ontario Health as the Skin Cancer Lead (2018) and has just been appointed as the Provincial Lead for the Surgical Oncology Program (2021).

Dr. Wright’s mentorship of postgraduate trainees has been both broad and deep, as well as sustained. Her mentorship dossier provides numerous individual examples of meaningful mentorship to achieve scholarly success and personal satisfaction. An excellent example of Dr. Wright’s impactful mentorship is Dr. Andrea Covelli, whose PhD studies she cosupervised along with Dr. Nancy Baxter. Dr. Covelli has enjoyed great academic success and recognition with her work on variables that influence patient decision making for prophylactic mastectomy, work that has been published in the Annals of Surgical Oncology and for which she won an ASCO Research Merit Award in 2015. Dr. Wright’s creativity, drive and collaborative spirit are an inspiration to others, while her compassion and common sense help her mentees to make sound career decisions for themselves. She puts her mentees first, and derives true satisfaction from their successes
About the Award
This award, also established in 2003, recognizes outstanding contributions of faculty members who demonstrate excellence in teaching and serve as mentors and advocates to postgraduate medical trainees. The award may acknowledge continuous or long- term excellence in instruction, career counseling, promotion of collegiality, or role modeling for postgraduate trainees.
